Cask No. 63.38

Perfumed and idiosyncratic

Speyside, Spey

Aside from barley hoppers, pencil leads and marzipan, the nose was really quite perfumed – fresh laundry, pot-pourri, Refresher sweets, mango, geranium and eucalyptus – clean and subtle. Water brought out some of the sweetness (honey, Dolly Mixtures) though it lost nothing of its floral, herbal and fruity perfumes. The palate, at natural strength, was hot and sweet with some synthetic fruity flavours (pear, banana, orange, pineapple) – other comments included carrot cake, gugelhupf (yeasted marble cake) and ‘munching on hyacinths’. Its idiosyncrasy was easier to forgive with water – zesty citrus, perfumed pineapple and the pleasantly moreish sweetness of vanilla ice-cream and jelly beans.
