Armagnac is gaining considerable momentum in the US as savvy spirit lovers turn to its rich and complex flavours for a decidedly unique taste adventure. Today, we are delighted to offer two newly released single cask Armagnac selections! An appreciation for Armagnac is heightened with a little bit of history. So let’s take a look at this region and the spirit it proudly produces.
Armagnac is a region in Southwest France, not far from Bordeaux. Considered France’s oldest spirit, Armagnac has been produced for over 700 years! This is about 200 years longer than the more widely recognized Cognac. Why is Cognac more recognized? It’s all about location. Armagnac is more inland, and secluded, to the southeast of Bordeaux than Cognac to the north of Bordeaux. Historically, this allowed much of Cognac’s exports to reach countries farther afield via waterways while Armagnac’s remote location relegated consumption to locals. But what proud locals they are! Today, distillers take as much pride in their homegrown spirit as they did several centuries ago.
Turning to the spirit itself, Armagnac is made using unique grape varietals including Baco, Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Folle Blanche, with each grape bringing different aromatic components to the final spirit. Distillation takes place in a specific form of the continuous still, known as the Armagnac Alambic, or L’Alambic Armagnaçais. Only one distillation is required so Armagnac is often considered as deeper, richer, more rustic than Cognac (two distillations required). Just think velvet vs. silk! Bas Armagnac is known as the premiere source of Armagnac from this region. Gascony black oak, a locally grown species used by many distilleries in the creation of Armagnac, is used in aging the spirits.
From Gascony, birthplace of D’Artagnan and The Three Musketeersand region that offers foie gras and truffles in copious amounts, come two exquisite casks for your collection.
